How to Avoid Dehydration for Seniors: 5 Tips for Staying Hydrated

Chanda Care • Aug 10, 2022

As the summer heat intensifies, it's important to be extra vigilant about staying hydrated.  That's especially true for seniors, who are more susceptible to dehydration due to age-related factors such as decreased thirst sensation and reduced kidney function. In addition, seniors are especially at risk for dehydration because they often don't feel thirsty, and they may not be able to get up to get a drink of water on their own. In fact, a study published in the journal SAGE Open Nursing, estimated that up to 40 percent of community-dwelling seniors may be chronically under hydrated.

Dehydration can lead to a number of health problems, including:

- confusion

- fatigue

- headache

- increased heart rate

- muscle cramps

- dizziness or lightheadedness

The good news is that dehydration is entirely preventable with a little planning and effort. Here are five tips to help seniors stay hydrated during these hot summer months.

5 Tips to Help Seniors Stay Hydrated

Drink Plenty of Fluids

As people age, they become more susceptible to dehydration for a variety of reasons. They may not feel as thirsty as they used to or have trouble getting up to get a drink. Medications can also cause seniors to lose fluid more quickly. For all of these reasons, it’s important for seniors to make a conscious effort to stay hydrated. The best way to do this is to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially water. Seniors should also avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate the body. In addition,  sugary drinks like soda can actually cause dehydration because they pull water from the body to metabolize the sugar.

Eat Water-Rich Foods

In addition to drinking fluids, seniors should also eat water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Some good options include watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Not only do these foods contain water, but they also have electrolytes like potassium, which can help prevent dehydration.

Avoid Hot Environments

Seniors should avoid spending too much time in hot environments, including staying out in the sun too long. If they must be in the heat, they should take breaks often to cool down in the shade or air conditioning. It’s also important to dress appropriately for hot weather, including loose, lightweight clothing and a hat.

Exercise Carefully

Exercise is important for seniors, but it’s also one of the leading causes of dehydration. This is because when people exercise, they sweat and lose fluids. To avoid dehydration, seniors should drink fluids before, during, and after exercise. They should also take breaks often and drink more fluids than usual on days when they are active.

Keep your home cool and comfortable

During the summer, seniors should keep their homes cool and comfortable to avoid dehydration. This can be done by opening windows at night and using fans or air conditioning during the day. It's also a good idea to keep the blinds closed during the day to help keep the heat out.

Know the Warming Signs of Dehydration

In addition to taking steps to avoid dehydration, it's critically important for seniors to know the warning signs of dehydration so they can seek treatment if necessary. These signs include:

- extreme thirst

- dry mouth

- little or no urination

- dark yellow urine

- headache

- dizziness or lightheadedness

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical help right away.
