Using Technology to Promote Senior Health

tech to promote senior health

Technology plays an essential role in senior health nowadays. And as a result of the government's multi-year Medicare initiative through Medicare Advantage (Part C), more private companies are finding technology-based ways to offer seniors coverage for promoting long-term health and well-being. Below, ChandaCare offers important information about how seniors can maintain wellness through technology.

Telemedicine for Virtual Visits and Remote Monitoring

Although some form of telemedicine has been around for 50 years, today, companies like eVisit provide physicians with telemedicine platforms for virtual consults and long-distance monitoring. And this has flourished in the age of COVID. As a patient, you may be able to have an initial visit and receive a diagnosis from a doctor via video. And if you live in a remote area, or if it's difficult to get out and make a doctor's appointment, many physicians offer long-term monitoring and virtual follow-up visits.

Wearables

Wearables that track and record statistics on your health and fitness habits are becoming increasingly more common, although the wearable industry is just beginning to offer what looks like a real trend for the future. Some wearables are covered by private companies through Medicare Advantage. For instance, companies such as Aetna and UnitedHealth are establishing partnerships with Apple Watch through Medicare Advantage to monitor and promote health and wellness, according to The Verge.

Smartphones and Apps

In addition to wearables, seniors can utilize their smartphones to download apps that can help monitor their heart, count calories, and make meal plans. However, to make the most of this technology, it’s important to have a reliable smartphone that can handle the latest and greatest apps on the market. For example, the iPhone 12 has a fast processor, a large screen, and a great camera. Of course, if you’re more of an Android fan, there are many comparable phones that will do precisely what you need to stay on top of your health. Whatever smartphone you invest in, purchase a sturdy case to keep your mobile device protected.

Robotics and AI

Robotics and AI already play a big role in helping seniors through developing robotic pets that provide the health benefits of real pets and by offering computerized personal health care assistants for senior patients. In another recent article, CNBC describes how the company Ageless Innovation distributes its Joy for All compassion pet brand. This brand makes robotic dogs and cats which are sold to senior living communities and other businesses, as well as to individuals. These robotic pets provide the same comforting and calming benefits which live pets can provide, but without the maintenance requirements.

CNBC's above-linked article also reports that the company Intuition Robotics makes a "proactive cognitive artificial intelligence product" or digital companion. It prompts habits that promote wellness by starting conversations that encourage the elderly patient to stay in contact with friends and family. The digital companion also reminds them to take their medication and engage in other behaviors necessary for maintaining their long-term health.

On a final note, Medicare Advantage plans offer coverage on many of these technology-based methods for promoting senior health. Be sure to address your current healthcare needs by reviewing your coverage during the Medicare Open Enrollment period, October 15 through December 7. The official Medicare.gov site makes it easy to compare Medicare plans, including regular and supplemental Medicare plans. There are also companies like eHealth Medicare that help you explore and compare optional plans through Medicare Advantage.

If you are enrolled in Parts A and B of Medicare, you're eligible to enroll in Medicare Advantage. If you are a senior who needs additional services, these plans can help you save in the long-term by spending a little more on an alternative Medicare Advantage plan. Plans from Aetna, for instance, cover expanded prescription, dental, vision, hearing, and preventative care benefits. So be sure to use the open enrollment period to explore how additional coverage through Medicare Advantage can save you money and help you live a healthier life.

Although technology might seem like a fad for the younger generation, it can actually help seniors stay on top of their health. So, find a reliable smartphone or tablet and download the apps you need to address your overall well-being.
